Affiliated with the Sydney Melanoma Unit and the Melanoma Foundation, the Sydney Melanoma Diagnostic Centre is a clinical unit of the Melanoma & Skin Cancer Research Institute, Sydney Cancer Centre, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown, Sydney, Australia.

Mission statement:

  • To apply best practice methods for the diagnosis and management of skin tumours, with a particular emphasis on pigmented lesions (eg. moles and melanoma).
  • To conduct research on diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for skin tumours, with a particular emphasis on pigmented lesions.

Clinical Staff

Scott Menzies is the Director of the Sydney Melanoma Diagnostic Centre and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Dept of Surgery (Melanoma & Skin Oncology) at the University of Sydney.

Researching and treating patients with skin cancer since 1988, Scott Menzies has been a clinician at the Sydney Melanoma Unit since 1991. For the majority of this time his activities have been solely related to skin cancer. In particular, he has a strong clinical interest in methods for the diagnosis of melanoma and moles. His research interests include the development of instrumentation for the diagnosis of melanoma, melanoma vaccines, and animal models of skin cancer.

Dr Kerry Crotty is the Deputy Director of the Sydney Melanoma Diagnostic Centre.  She is both a dermatologist and dermatopathologist. 

Dr Crotty has a special interest in the clinical and pathological diagnosis of moles, melanoma and other skin tumours, and is one of only two specialists in Australia who have both the Fellowship of the Australian College of Dermatologists and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia.  She is the author of one book, five chapters and more than forty papers predominantly in the field of melanoma and other pigmented lesions.

Professor William McCarthy AM, is Emeritus Professor of Surgery (Melanoma and Skin Oncology) at The University of Sydney, Director of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research Institute, and a Director of the Melanoma Foundation and Deputy Director of the Sydney Melanoma Unit.

Professor McCarthy has been involved in the clinical management of people with melanoma for thirty years and directed the Sydney Melanoma Unit for fifteen years until 1999. He was instrumental in the formation of MASCRI (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research Institute) by bringing together the melanoma and skin cancer research activity of a variety of units within The University of Sydney, The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the Newcastle Melanoma Unit and the Westmead Melanoma Genetics Unit.
