Patients with recently diagnosed melanoma are initially assessed and managed by surgeons. Consultation with other members of the Sydney Melanoma Unit will be arranged by the surgical staff or, if appropriate, directly by the referring doctor. Some surgeons consult in their own rooms in addition to the SMU rooms at 1A Eden Street North Sydney.
All new patients require a referral letter from their General Practitioner or referring specialist. This provides important clinical information and allows a partial reimbursement claim to be made with Medicare. Clinicians at the Sydney Melanoma Unit are individual specialists, and invoices will be issued at the time of consultation. The SMU is not a public hospital outpatient clinic, nor a bulk billing practice. Refer to fees policy.
The Sydney Melanoma Unit offers appointments for melanoma patients regarding treatments, surgery and melanoma follow up reviews. Patients who are not diagnosed with melanoma, but are seeking to have their skin and moles checked, should see their General Practitioner for referral to the Sydney Melanoma Diagnostic Centre.
